microgreen subscription program

January 9, 2023 by Christina

A zero-waste, plastic free alternative for Mayne Island microgreen lovers.

Sign up anytime for a subscription and you can start picking up your weekly zero-waste microgreens from the roadside stand 2 weeks later. To sign up, shoot me an email and I’ll respond to confirm with more pickup and payment info for you.

Email me: christina@christinasgarden.com

Cost is $80 for 4 weeks plus a one-time $20 container deposit.

More details:

An order is 300g of 5 varieties of microgreens placed individually into your reusable container: pea shoots, sunflower shoots, china rose radish microgreens, broccoli microgreens and red cabbage microgreens.

A container deposit is required on your first order. This container is yours to keep (it’s borosilicate glass with a BPA-free snap lid). There will be 2 containers with your name on them and we’ll rotate them week to week. Or, if you decide not to continue with the microgreen subscription and you don’t want to keep the container, you can return it and your deposit will be refunded.

Your order will be ready for you to pick up on Wednesday afternoons (noon-dusk).

Simply come to the roadside stand, aka the Shoot Shack at 340 East West Road to pick up your order. It’ll have your name on it. After your first pickup, be sure to bring your empty container from the previous week (*very important) so we can refill it with the following week’s order.

When using your weekly nutritious greens, you can choose to make your own micromix  or use the flavourful and colourful greens individually in salads, sandwiches and wraps, in buddha bowls, in smoothies, on soup or pizza, or alongside pretty much any meal.

A little back-story:

I’ve been producing microgreens on Mayne Island for almost 15 years now and over the years, the packaging has been a consistent conundrum. I remember constantly researching alternatives, way back when, and learning about things like plant-based alternatives, for example, only to learn about why they weren’t an honest to goodness helpful solution in our region, and so on and so on…I’d think to myself, “well in 10 years, there will be something”….and here we are, more than 10 years later and there isn’t anything. Just our own creativity to help us reduce at least some of the plastic use.

I’ve tried a few different things but most have been clunky and ultimately unsustainable over time, unfortunately, often causing unmanageable extra work for me and fewer sales too. I have high hopes for this subscription program though. I’ve noticed over the last few years of roadside stand sales that many of my regular weekly customers pick up more than one package at a time, often 4-5 packs at once. Observing this, (along with how many folks tell me the microgreens are a staple on their refrigerator shelves) has contributed to the inspiration for this program.

A sincere, big Thank You to all my wonderful friends and neighbours on Mayne Island who are the best dang customers anyone could ever ask for! I feel so fortunate to be able to grow good food on this little island for local folks who care.
